A man fell about 40m from a cliff at a popular swimming spot in Melbourne, sparking a major emergency operation.

A man has fallen about 40m down a cliff at a popular swimming spot in Melbourne’s southeast.

The 18-year-old fell off the cliff’s edge at Half Moon Bay in Black Rock about 8.30pm on Sunday.

Firefighters and a high angle rescue team worked to extricate the man, who fell about 40m.

Crews from Fire Rescue Victoria and the State Emergency Service managed to lower the 18-year-old onto the beach.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics.
