A man has been rescued by passing jetskiers after being seriously injured when a whale struck his tinny just before 9am on Sunday morning.

The man, in his 40s, was knocked unconscious and received facial and spinal injuries after he was hit in the face by the whale’s tail in waters off Duranbah on the NSW, Queensland border.

Queensland Police say the man didn’t know the whale was there until it appeared in front of him and was knocked unconscious when it struck.

He was the sole occupant of a tinny about 2km off the Tweed Bar when the terrifying incident unfolded.

Jetski riders who were nearby called triple-0.

The Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed its paramedics are assisting and the man is in a stable condition.

A spokesperson from Queensland Police told AAP, “[We] urge all boaties to always wear life jackets, fortunately this man remained in his boat.”
