A young man has been killed in a motorcycle crash on a major highway in NSW.

The rider, believed to be aged in his 20s, was travelling on the Pacific Hwy in Charlestown in the Lake Macquarie area at 7.20pm on Thursday.

The motorcycle then left the road and crashed into a light pole.

Paramedics treated the man, but he died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

Police have established a crime scene and are investigating how the crash happened.

They have urged anyone with information to contact them and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
