A man has been shot by police after allegedly confronting them with a knife in northeast NSW on Wednesday morning, NSW Police say.

Police were called to a park on Ryan Street in Grafton at about 6.30am in response to reports of a concern for welfare.

The man allegedly approached officers and threatened them with a knife before he was shot by police.

He was later airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable but serious condition.

No officers were injured, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been launched.
