The incident involved a black Honda sedan and a grey Nissan Pathfinder, both travelling towards Blacktown.

According to police, the Honda sedan collided with the SUV before veering off the road and striking a large gum tree.

The SUV came to a stop about 50 meters away on the opposite side of the four-lane road.

A female passenger in the sedan sustained life-threatening head injuries and has been rushed to Westmead Hospital, while the male driver of the sedan is also en route to the same hospital with internal injuries.

The two occupants of the SUV, a young female learner driver and her male supervisor, escaped the crash without injury.

Initial investigations suggest that the sedan may have clipped the SUV before losing control, but specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are working to determine the exact cause of the collision.

Richmond Road remains closed in both directions between Breakfast Road and Love Street.

Police are urging any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
