A Jetstar passenger was removed from Melbourne Airport after attempting to smoke on the tarmac.

A Jetstar flight from Melbourne to the Gold Coast was delayed for about an hour on Tuesday morning after a passenger attempted to smoke while boarding.

The man allegedly tried to light a cigarette on the tarmac as travellers lined up to board flight JQ434. Shocked passengers watched as airport security swiftly moved in, before calling the Australian Federal Police to remove the man from the restricted area.

Jetstar confirmed the incident, saying the passenger’s actions breached airport rules and created an unnecessary safety risk, 7 News reported.

“Smoking is strictly prohibited in and around aircraft, and our team took immediate action to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew,” a spokesperson said.

The drama caused a significant delay, with the Gold Coast-bound flight held at the gate while the situation was resolved. Passengers eventually departed after a wait of roughly one hour.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the man will face penalties, but smoking on an airport tarmac is considered a serious offence under aviation safety laws.
