Two young men who lost their lives in a tragic river drowning on the NSW Mid North Coast over the Australia Day long weekend have been identified.

Indian nationals Sachin and Sahil, both in their 30s, were spending the day with their partners at the Never Never River at John Locke Place, Gleniffer, when disaster struck around 6.45pm on Sunday.

Despite desperate efforts to save them, the men could not be revived after being pulled from the water. Sachin’s fiancée was also rushed to Coffs Harbour Health Campus in a serious condition.

Family friend Sunita Kalkal has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the families, describing how the joyful long weekend outing turned into heartbreak.

“They were being responsible and cautious, stepping only into shallow water,” Ms Kalkal said.

“In an unforeseeable moment, a strong current surged and swept them away. What should have been an innocent moment turned into an unthinkable tragedy.

“Sahil leaves behind his 7-month pregnant wife, and Sachin’s fiancée, who bravely tried to help, is now hospitalised with critical injuries.”

Ms Kalkal added that both men’s fathers were battling serious medical issues, leaving them unable to shoulder the financial strain.

Their families are seeking support from both Australian and Indian communities, with hopes of raising $200,000. The fundraiser has already drawn in more than $100,000 to help repatriate the men’s bodies to India and assist their grieving loved ones.

Police established a crime scene following the incident, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
