A man has been charged after two people were injured in a serious car crash in Sydney’s southwest.

Officers had attempted to stop a Renault SUV, along Waminda Avenue in Campbelltown about 10.40am on Wednesday, and initiated a pursuit when the driver allegedly failed to stop.

The pursuit was terminated a short time later along Moore Oxley Bypass, and a police operation involving PolAir continued to monitor the vehicle, NSW Police said.

The SUV then allegedly ran a red light and collided with a ute vehicle before hitting a pole outside Lockies Hotel, on the corner of Denham Court Rd and Camden Valley Wy at Leppington, about 11.15am.

The 33-year-old man behind the wheel of the SUV was ejected from the vehicle in the crash. He was treated by paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition while under police guard.

Paramedics said he sustained head and limb injuries.

The 49-year-old man behind the wheel of the ute suffered minor injuries and was taken to Liverpool Hospital as a precaution in a stable condition.

The northbound lanes of the road were closed for some time, but have since reopened.

Initial reports suggested the SUV had been stolen, but police corrected the record, alleging it had instead been involved in the theft of a Mercedes coupe parked outside Thomas Hassall Anglican College in Middleton Grange about 8.30am, during which a 39-year-old woman was injured and taken to Liverpool Hospital with minor injuries.

A man gained entry into a car but was initially prevented from driving away by the woman, police allege.

The Mercedes was later located unattended along Richmond Crescent in Campbelltown, by officers at 9.45am.

The vehicle was seized for forensic examination.

“An independent critical incident investigation has been launched into the operation and is being led by officers from the Cumberland Police Area Command and the Crash Investigation Unit,” police said.

“The incident is also subjected to an independent review from the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.”

Late on Thursday, police confirmed the 33-year-old man had been charged with aggravated robbery and inflict actual bodily harm, police pursuit not-stop drive dangerously and drive furiously in motor vehicle cause bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear via audio visual link before Liverpool Local Court where he was further refused bail to appear before Campbelltown Local Court on January 9.
