Central Coast: DNA breakthrough leads to charges after nine-year-old allegedly sexually assaulted in 1996

A man has been charged following a “DNA breakthrough” almost three decades after a nine-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted in NSW.
He was allegedly attacked by a man not known to him on March 26, 1996, with an investigation launched at the time.
“Despite extensive inquiries, we were unable to make an arrest at the time of the incident,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

“Detectives have charged a man following an investigation into an alleged historic sexual assault after a DNA breakthrough led to an arrest yesterday.”
“As a result of further inquiries and advances in forensic DNA technology, detectives from the Tuggerah Lakes Criminal Investigation team arrested a 65-year-old man at Bathurst Police Station yesterday.
He was charged with sexual intercourse with a person under 10 years old, and attempting sexual intercourse with a person under 10.
He was refused bail to appear before a bail court on Thursday.
