Brisbane bus crash footage: Car becomes airborne before smashing into bus in dramatic new CCTV

Dramatic new footage has captured the moment a car became airborne before smashing into the side of a Brisbane bus.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Beaudesert and Granard roads at Rocklea, in Brisbane’s south, about 6.30pm on July 29 after reports a hatchback had launched into the side of a Brisbane City Council bus.

CCTV footage from inside the bus shows the blue hatchback flying through the air before becoming lodged in the side of the vehicle.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner praised the bus driver for his quick actions following the crash, saying he helped the car’s driver out of the vehicle and into a seat on the bus.

“The driver went straight into action and assisted the driver of the car, and he’s also a driver that has a really good record with council as well; he’s served for at least seven years and had lots of commendations from the public,” he told ABC radio.

The bus driver could be heard on radio checking on the woman, asking “are you ok? Just wait. He then made sure the couple were alright, saying: “sit here, have a seat”.

The 45-year-old Pallara woman was taken to hospital in a state of shock, but no serious injuries were reported.

The bus was travelling back to the depot at the time and only the driver and his wife were on board.

Police said the crash occurred after the driver of a black SsangYong attempted to merge from a centre lane while turning near the intersection, causing the driver of the blue Toyota Yaris to swerve into the path of the bus.

The SsangYong driver, a 66-year-old Durack man, was later fined $690 and lost three demerit points for driving without due care and attention.
