Driver killed in single-vehicle crash on Hume Highway in Bowning, NSW

A driver has died when their car struck a tree and burst into flames on a highway in NSW’s south on Friday evening.

The car was travelling on the Hume Hwy in Bowning, about an hour south of Canberra, when it veered off the road about 5.50pm.

The vehicle slammed into a tree and then caught fire, with a private water tanker which was passing by stopping to try and extinguish the blaze.

The vehicle was already “completely destroyed” and the driver died at the scene, police said.

They have not yet been formally identified.

“A crime scene has been established an investigation has commenced into the circumstances of the crash,” NSW Police said.

One lane was closed on the highway however it has since reopened.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
