Police are hunting for a man who crashed and flipped his car on a quiet street in Menai. The man pulled two children from the vehicle before fleeing.

A father has shocked witnesses when he pulled his children from a flipped car and allegedly fled the scene after a crash — leaving behind the wreckage and an injured victim.

The man, driving a black Mitsubishi ute with two children inside, collided with a grey Mazda on Rosewell Dr in Menai, in Sydney’s south, about 1pm on Saturday.

CCTV footage captured the moment the ute flipped onto its side, with the loud noise from the crash drawing residents outside.

“We heard this huge double really loud bang … I thought the garage door had fallen down,” witness Claire Harrison said.

The ute driver then climbed out of the flipped car, pulled his two young children out, and allegedly fled the scene as stunned witnesses looked on.

Along with the wrecked ute, the crashed Mazda was also left behind, with its 43-year-old female driver screaming in panic.

“The lady driving the car … just screaming hysterically,” Harrison said.

Neighbours rushed to help the woman before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived to assess her at the scene.

“My carer got some water and everything and tried to calm her down, but she wasn’t [couldn’t]. And I don’t blame her — she was in shock.”

Neighbours were also concerned about the children’s health.

“I was worried about the kids because I would have thought if the ambulance came and checked him maybe that concussion or something,” said Vahid Tavakol, another witness, adding that speeding may have played a role in the accident.

The ute was eventually cleared by a tow truck, and police are still searching for the driver.

“Investigations have commenced into the circumstances of the crash, and inquiries are ongoing to locate the driver,” police said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage is urged to come forward.

The maximum penalty for fleeing the scene of a car crash for the first time in NSW could be up to 18 months imprisonment or a fine of $3300, depending on the circumstances of the incident.
