Hunt for gunman following major police pursuit in Sydney’s west
A major police operation was launched after the armed driver fled on foot and disappeared.
Shots have been fired at the end of a police chase in Sydney’s west, with police still on the hunt for the gunman.
A police pursuit was initiated about 9.20pm on Friday night in the South Wentworthville area when the driver of a Nissan ute with irregular number plates was spotted doing a right hand turn against traffic signs.
The driver failed to pull over and police followed him through several residential streets in Merrylands and Guildford.

No injuries were reported.

The vehicle then continued onto Guildford Rd where it stopped near the intersection with Robertson Rd.
The male driver ran from the vehicle and five shots into the air.
An extensive search was carried out with police from Highway Patrol, Public Order and Riot Squad (PORS) and Dog Squad, as well as PolAir.
Officers looked in homes, backyards and under houses but could not find the man.

NSW Police Chief Inspector Ricky Agius said possessing an unlawful firearm in a public place was a serious offence.
“The male in my opinion is totally irresponsible, totally stupid in his actions by discharging a firearm in a public place, putting people and the community at risk and we’re very lucky that no one was killed or injured from that action,” he said.
Agius said confirmed the man had the gun pointed upwards into the air and was not trying to fire at police or any other person.
The Nissan he was driving has been seized for forensic examination.
The driver was last seen wearing a bright orange shirt.
Anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
