Lake Illawarra: Windang house fire under investigation after body found in destroyed home

A man is believed to have died after a terrifying house fire tore through a property at Lake Illawarra late Tuesday night.

Emergency services were called to Murrie Street, Windang, just before midnight on Tuesday after reports of a blaze. Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District arrived to find the home engulfed in flames.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews battled the blaze but were unable to save the property, which collapsed after being gutted by fire.

The resident, a man in his 60s, could not be located.

A forensic search of the wreckage later uncovered a man’s body, which has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be that of the occupant.

A crime scene has been established as detectives investigate the cause of the blaze.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
