Police have been confronted with a terrible situation after a dog was killed during the arrest of a family allegedly hiding from police in a paddock in far northern NSW.

Two people will face court on Tuesday after a police chase in Lismore on Monday, which took place at about 5.30pm involving officers from the Richmond police district.

Those officers observed a Ford Territory SUV on Terania Street, North Lismore and stopped the vehicle on nearby Wilson Street.

The occupants, a 32-year-old man, and a 24-year-old woman, are alleged to have swapped seats in the vehicle and refused to produce identification.

Police attempted to arrest the man, who allegedly resisted before the pair drove off and officers gave chase.

The chase was called off shortly afterwards, but the Ford was found abandoned in Bentley, near Lismore.

A police dog helped track down a man and woman, who were arrested after being found hiding in a nearby paddock with a six-year-old child and three dogs.

But the arrest took a devastating turn when one of the dogs was killed by police after attacking the police dog.

The man and woman were taken to Lismore police station where they were both hit with a raft of charges.

Two outstanding warrants were also executed and both people have been refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court on Tuesday.

Police are liaising with the Department of Family and Community Services and the police dog is being monitored for injuries.
