A jeweller in Sydney's Inner West has reportedly chased after a man who tried to rob his store at gun point.

A man is on the run after attempting to rob a jewellery store with a fake gun in broad daylight in Sydney’s Inner West.

Police were called to the shop on King St in Newtown about 12.15pm following reports of an armed hold-up.

The man entered the store and threatened staff with what appeared to be a handgun.

Police later found the weapon nearby and confirmed it was a replica.

Witnesses told 7NEWS they saw a man fleeing down King Street, with the jeweller chasing after him, but he ultimately got away.

No one was injured.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public but are still searching for the suspect.

A crime scene has been established, and investigations are ongoing.
