A manhunt is underway after a man was reportedly attacked with an axe at a NSW shopping centre.

Emergency services rushed to the Tweed City Shopping Centre on Minjungbal Drive at around 3.30pm on Thursday after reports a 25-year-old man had received injuries to his face.

He has since been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

A weapon has reportedly been seized by police, which will be subject to forensic testing.
