He then allegedly ran from the scene, taking her house keys.

The woman reported the attack to police and was taken to hospital for a medical assessment.

Police believe the pair, who were unknown to each other, met near Charles Mance Reserve about 12.30pm.

Earlier this week, Detective Acting Superintendent Rachel Fawcett described the incident as “appalling”.

Following a public appeal for information and what police said was an extensive investigation, a 41-year-old man was taken into custody at a unit complex on Harris St in Fairfield on Friday.

He is being questioned by police and is expected to be charged with sexual assault and related offences.

Police inquiries are ongoing.
