A gunman is on the run in Sydney after a home was sprayed with bullets in a drive-by shooting overnight.

Police were called to a house in Myall Street, Merrylands, after reports that shots had been fired from a moving car.

According to The Daily Telegraph, police are investigating whether the intended target of the shooting was an underworld figure who had previously been arrested on gun charges.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Police and firefighters were called to a car fire in Bass Hill a short time after the frightening incident, with a Hyundai hatchback ablaze.

The fire was extinguished but the car was completely destroyed.
