A search has resumed for a missing 78-year-old man, after his boat capsized in waters in NSW’s Illawarra region at the weekend.

About 1pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to the break wall in Seawall Road, Port Kembla, in Wollongong after reports two people were in the water.

Police arrived to find a capsized vessel, about 1km south of Port Kembla Road.

“An 18-year-old man — who was on the vessel before it capsized — got himself to the shore and alerted members of the public who contacted emergency services,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Police said Marine Area Command launched a search operation, with assistance from Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Helicopter, but the second man could not be found.

The search continued from about 8am today, and part of a vessel, believed to be that of the missing fisherman, was found.

“It has been taken to Port Kembla boat ramp for initial examination,” NSW Police said.

The search continues.
