Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was flown in a critical condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital, but he died that evening about 7.15pm.

The 52-year-old man behind the wheel of the ute was taken to Murwillumbah District Hospital for mandatory testing.

A roadside breath test returned a negative result.

Both vehicles were seized by police for forensic examination.

A crime scene has been established, and investigations are ongoing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
