WATCH: Moment Sydney police bring down man after he allegedly stabbed a police officer twice in the head
Footage has been released and police have charged a man who will appear in court today after he allegedly stabbed a police officer in the head near Sydney’s Hyde Park before demanding police shoot him.
Two officers were conducting traffic duties at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets on Sunday (May 20), when a male police officer identified as Constable Elvis Poa, aged 35 and attached to the Kings Cross Area Command, was approached from behind by a man shortly after 1pm, who allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the officer in the head.
The alleged attacker then ran from the scene and was pursued by the injured officer and a female constable along Park Street and into Hyde Park, with officers directing the man to drop the knife.

By continuing you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy.Shortly after, the officers confronted the man who was still armed with the knife, before more police arrived at the scene and the alleged attacker was tasered.
“Whilst he was in the park, he still had the knife in his hand and he was demanding that police shoot him,” Detective Superintendent Martin Fileman said.
‘’He is known to police but does not have a history of mental illness recorded on the police database or a “substantial” criminal record.
“This was very much an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the public,” the Detective Superintendent added.
Constable Poa (pictured) was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for two wounds to his head and was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where scans have since revealed he suffered two skull fractures and remains in a stable condition.
The 34-year-old man was arrested and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital under police guard for assessment.
Crime scenes were established at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets and Elizabeth Street, near Bathurst Street. They have since been forensically examined.
Detectives commenced an investigation into the incident under Strike Force Dills.
Upon being released from hospital, the man was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.
He was refused bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today (Monday 20 May 2024).
