An urgent search and rescue is underway to find a missing swimmer in Newcastle.

A woman was seen entering the water at Newcastle Beach on Shortland Esplanade about 4.35am on Sunday morning.

The alarm was raised when she did not return, and NSW Police have launched a multi-agency search operation.

“Police with assistance from Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter immediately commenced a multi-agency search to locate the woman,” police said.

“She was last seen wearing a pink top, black pants and no shoes.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
