Multiple shots were fired at around just after 3 o'clock this afternoon here on The Boulevard - just off the Grande Parade.

Shots have been fired on a popular beach strip in southern Sydney, terrifying locals and sparking a major police operation.

Emergency services rushed to The Boulevarde in Brighton-Le-Sands about 3.15pm on Tuesday following reports a gunman had opened fire near the Grand Parade.

Police have been told an Audi SUV turned onto The Boulevarde from the Grand Parade before someone in the car pulled a gun out, firing shots towards three men standing near a parked vehicle.

The three men and the Audi SUV with the gunman in it then fled the scene.

The Audi was later found on fire about a 20 minute drive away from the scene on Windarra St, Narwee.

The blaze was quickly extinguished by firefighters, leaving the car a burnt-out shell.

There were no reports of injuries, but three cars were found with bullet holes and a nearby building was also peppered with bullets.

A witness on the Brighton-Le-Sands described hearing several popping sounds, initially mistaking them for fireworks.

Another witness said they had heard about three to five shots fired.

Police have launched a search of the area, and a crime scene has been established.

The Boulevarde remains closed between The Grand Parade and Trafalgar Street as investigations continue.
