Surry Hills tram tragedy: Man dies after being struck by light rail carriage in Sydney

A man has died after being struck by a light rail carriage in Surry Hills, sparking a major police operation and halting services in the busy inner-city precinct.
Emergency services were called to Devonshire Street just after 1.15pm on Thursday following reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a light rail vehicle.
Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command arrived to find a man, believed to be in his 40s, trapped under the carriage.

According to the Daily Telegraph, witnesses described a confronting scene at the light rail stop, with one bystander saying, “I heard a bit of a commotion. I just looked down and thought somebody’s dog had run underneath or something. There was a bloke’s f...ing leg sticking out.”
Police established a crime scene and have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
