Sydney Harbour water mysteriously turns blood-red: ’Not been able to find the source’

Sydney Harbour has turned bright red, with the cause currently unknown.

The bright red water, flowing into the harbour at Milson Park in Kirribilli, was spotted on Monday afternoon.

Council is aware of the issue, a North Sydney Council spokesperson said.

“Officers have investigated but have not been able to find the source,” the spokesperson said.

“We have reported it to the EPA.

“The cause of the colour is likely to be plumbers dye which, while alarming in appearance, is safe and non-toxic.”

The “fluorescent green liquid” was spotted about 3pm on September 25.

Firefighters who specialise in hazardous materials were sent “to investigate this large spill or leakage of a fluorescent green substance”, Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said at the time.

Authorities then also concluded the colouring was likely caused by fluorescein, or plumbing dye — but the exact location of the leak was not

Dewberry said it was unlikely they would find the exact cause, as there are so many points where water could enter the harbour from.

No harm was identified to marine life or property as a result of the dye.
