Sydney’s Metro network was thrown into disarray during peak hour after a technical fault brought services to a halt at Barangaroo station just after 4pm today.

A malfunction with the pantograph — the device that connects trains to overhead power lines — triggered major delays, forcing services to terminate at Barangaroo and shuttle between there and Sydenham.

Transport authorities urged commuters to seek alternative options and check live updates via travel apps.

It’s the third major disruption to Sydney’s rail network in less than a week.

Frustrated passengers took to social media with live updates.

“All these Metro services are emptying out at Barangaroo and returning to Tallawong with only a handful of passengers,” one commuter posted. “Meanwhile, the number of people trying to go south is growing and growing.”

Another said: “Been trying to get home for over an hour and can’t get past Martin Place.”

Transport for NSW has yet to confirm when full services will resume, leaving thousands of evening commuters in limbo.
