A volatile night across Sydney’s south-west has left two police officers injured and one man fighting for life, following a series of violent incidents spanning multiple suburbs.

The first confrontation unfolded in Punchbowl just before 9pm, when specialist officers attempted to intercept a suspected stolen vehicle.

Police allege the driver of a Toyota CHR accelerated as officers approached, trapping a sergeant between two parked cars at an intersection. In the chaos, a firearm was discharged by the police officer, striking the vehicle before it sped off.

The 39-year-old officer suffered injuries to his lower leg and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The car was later found abandoned in nearby Ryde, where officers responding to reports of an injured man made a second discovery. A 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound was located in the yard of a residential property and taken to hospital, where he remains under police guard.

Hours later, a separate shooting unfolded in Chester Hill, escalating concerns about the night’s violence.

Emergency services were called to Campbell Hill Road about 11.30pm after reports of gunfire, with police told shots had been fired from a black utility into another vehicle before both fled.

A short time later, a 26-year-old man arrived at Auburn Hospital suffering gunshot wounds. He remains in a critical condition.

Investigations quickly expanded to hospital itself, where officers located a bullet-damaged Mercedes in the car park, establishing a another crime scene.

But the situation deteriorated again inside the emergency department, where a senior officer was allegedly attacked during police inquiries.

A 58-year-old chief inspector was left with a head injury after allegedly being repeatedly struck, with a 30-year-old man arrested at the scene.

He has been charged with assaulting police and refused bail, appearing before Burwood Local Court.

Detectives are now working across multiple locations to piece together the sequence of events, including whether the shootings are connected.

Authorities have appealed for anyone with information or relevant dashcam and CCTV footage to come forward as investigations continue.
