The Unicorn Hotel in Paddington to close
Another beloved Sydney pub is shutting its doors amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
The Unicorn Hotel in Paddington in Sydney’s eastern suburbs announced it would be closed from September 1.
“We want to thank every staff member and collaborator and supplier from the bottom of our crazy wee hearts for being the reason this dream was lived,” owners Kenny Graham, Jake Smyth, Oscar McMahon and Drew Corbel said in an announcement on Instagram.

The pub said it was welcoming all punters to a “Last Hurrah” of Unicorn schnitzels and “late-night dance-floor shenanigans”.
“In 2017, a bunch of idiot mates were given the opportunity of a lifetime — to breathe new life into a magical beast,” they said.
“It has been one of the most difficult, rewarding, challenging and fulfilling experiences of our lives.”
The iconic venue, on the corner of Oxford St, was taken over by the group, who are also behind Mary’s of Newtown, in 2017.
The pub was well known for its old school, comfort dishes such as winged schnitzels, and Jatz crackers with house-made French onion dip.
Locals were devastated to hear the news of the pub’s closure, bidding the venue farewell on social media.
“The Unicorn will forever be the best example of Australian pub food & culture,” one person said.
“This is very sad news. So many great times and delicious wines,” another added.
“Goddamn. For seven years it’s been impossible to have a bad time at the Unicorn. So many of my favourite Sydney times. What a blow,” a third said.
