Urgent manhunt underway after Kyle Quayle mistakenly released from NSW jail

An urgent manhunt is underway after a prisoner was mistakenly released from custody in NSW.

Kyle Quayle, 35, was wrongly released from a correctional centre on Tuesday, where he had been serving a sentence for stealing and assault-related offences.

NSW Police have released an image of Quayle, who is wanted on an unlawfully at large warrant.

He is believed to be in the Newcastle area.

Quayle is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, about 180cm tall, of medium build, with black hair and brown eyes and is unshaven.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the error was “embarrassing”.

“I’m sorry it happened, really. It’s embarrassing,” he told the ABC.

“In 2026, with the biometric and identification tools available, it shouldn’t happen.

“I want to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
