At about 1.30am on Tuesday today, police responded to reports of two men attempting to gain entry to a home on Calaria Close, Edensor Park.

On arrival, officers attached to Fairfield City police area command were told the men, believed to be armed with a firearm, left the scene in a Hyundai sedan.

Police established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A short time later, police observed the vehicle travelling on Cowpasture Road, Hinchinbrook.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle; however, when it failed to do so, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

A short time later at around 1.50am, the vehicle crashed on St Andrews Road, Varroville, following the successful deployment of road spikes.

The driver of the vehicle – a 20-year-old man – was arrested at the scene and was taken to Campbelltown Police Station where inquiries are ongoing.

The passenger fled the scene on foot.

A perimeter was established at St Andrews Road, Varroville, by officers attached to Campbelltown City Police Area Command with the assistance of polair and other specialist police resources.

An exclusion zone is in place at St Andrews Road with road blocks applied around the M5 with a command post set up to coordinate the various teams.

Localised traffic diversions are in place and the community is advised to avoid the area.
