Canley Heights: Organised crime links suspected after alleged shooting murder of man in western Sydney
Several major police teams have been enacted to investigate the alleged shooting murder of a man they believe has organised crime links.
As police reported the terrifying incident in the western Sydney suburb of Canley Heights on Sunday evening, one of Australia’s most experienced crime reporters has painted a grim picture of the emerging chaos on the streets, as gangs position themselves to control the explosion of drug sales in Australia’s biggest city.
The Daily Telegraph’s Mark Morri has been covering the crime round in Sydney for decades and told 2GB’s John Stanley that he has never seen it worse, with brazen assassinations now common-place.

“There is a battle on a number of fronts, not just with bikies and middle-eastern gangs.”
Police have commenced investigations after the man was fatally shot at about 6.50pm and emergency services were called to Sutherland Street, following reports of gun shots.
A man – believed to be aged in his 30’s – was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for gunshot wounds, however he died at the scene.
Officers from Fairfield City police area command attended and established a crime scene, which will be forensically examined.
A short time later, emergency services were called to an abandoned car on fire on Bathurst Street, Wakeley with Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguishing the blaze soon after.
Investigations into the incidents – which are believed to be linked – are underway by officers from Fairfield City police, assisted by the state crime command’s homicide squad and organised crime gang detectives..
“There have been a lot of kidnappings we don’t hear about as well,” Morri added
“We have seen some of the most awful situations where people were having their fingers and toes cut off and photos being sent to syndicates of family members saying ‘pay up’.
“Invariably this is about drugs and money and shootings now happen in shopping centres and gyms, and we have seen teenage gummen emerging as they don’t mind going to jail for 10 years because they emerge with status.”
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
As inquires continue, anyone with information this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
