A man has been arrested after allegedly ramming his vehicle through the front gates of the Russian consulate in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Police were called to the consulate on Fullerton Street in Woollahra following reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway of the consulate.

When police attempted to speak with the 39-year-old driver, he allegedly drove the vehicle into the property’s gates.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to Surry Hills Police Station. The NSW Police dog unit were seen searching the vehicle.

A 24-year-old constable sustained a hand injury during the incident and was treated by paramedics. No other injuries were reported.

Pro-Kremlin influencer Simeon Boikov, who goes by the moniker Aussie Cossack online, has been holed up at the consulate for 1000 days after he was charged with assaulting a pro-Ukraine protester in Sydney.

He was woken by the sound of police sirens about 8.30am and, after initially thinking there was a fire next door, emerged to find the Toyota parked on the consulate’s lawn.

Boikov said the driver was already being pursued by police as he drove through the compound’s gates.

“From my side, it looks like a diplomatic asylum attempt,” he told AAP.

The Polish consulate is also on Fullerton Street, falling within “Woollahra’s consular belt”, as a real estate listing describes the area.

A witness claimed a police officer drew his gun during the incident, as reported by The Daily Telegraph.

“The car kept on driving, heading into the consulate grounds,” a neighbour said.

“There was a policeman drawing his gun, asking him to get out of the car.

“It’s hard to know the motivations, it could be anything.

“It was pretty dramatic. It’s not something you see every day.”

Minor damage to the front gate was quickly repaired.

The area was being guarded by federal police.
