Woollahra: Man arrested at Sydney Airport and charged after anti-Jewish vandalism causes $100,000 damage

A man allegedly responsible for a vandalism spree that targeted a prominent Jewish community has been arrested at Sydney Airport.

Residents in the suburb of Woollahra in Sydney’s eastern suburbs fell victim to the shocking attack on vehicles and properties last week, as the alleged offender went on an anti-Semetic rampage that produced damage estimated to be upward of $100,000.

At about 12.30am on Thursday November 21, emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle on fire on Wellington Street, Woollahra.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the fire, however, the vehicle was destroyed.

On further investigation police discovered a further nine vehicles parked along Wellington Street, Tara Street, Fullerton Street and Ocean Street were also badly damaged and graffitied.

Another vehicle allegedly received minor damage as a result of the fire with the total estimated value believed to be in excess of $70,000.

Three buildings located on Ocean Street and Fullerton Street were also allegedly graffitied. At this time, the total estimated value of the damage is between $20,000 to $30,000.

A crime scene was established, and an investigation commenced under strike force mylor.

Investigators converged on the Sydney Airport at Mascot in the early hours of Monday morning and arrested a 20-year-old man they suspect is the perpetrator.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with 21 offences including:

  • 14 counts destroy or damage property
  • Three counts enter building / land with intent commit indictable offence
  • Destroy property in company use fire more than $5,000
  • Destroy property in company use fire less than $2,000
  • Face blackened / disguised with intent commit indictable offence
  • Behave in offensive manner in /near public place / school

He was refused bail and will appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday.today (Monday 25 November 2024).
