Thousands of revellers descended upon Sydney’s Bronte Beach for Christmas festivities on Wednesday, resulting in a large clean-up and one person in a critical condition in hospital.

The now-traditional celebration continued well into the night and left a mess of rubbish in its wake, with large crowds some have likened to those at a music festival.

Residents have complained about rubbish and food scraps left behind by partygoers, with clean-up crews working overnight to clean up the mess.

There was reportedly increased security this year, though it was not treated as a major event requiring paramedics on standby.

Paramedics did attend the beach several times throughout the day for incidents of intoxication and injuries — including glass injuries and sprained ankles.

A NSW Police spokesperson only highlighted one major incident throughout the day.

A man was jumping off a cliff into a pool when he “slipped and fell onto (a) hard surface” near Calga Pl at Bronte about 4.30pm, they said.

He suffered head injuries and was treated by paramedics at the beach.

“A specialist medical team was flown to the scene by helicopter, landing in Calga Reserve,” NSW Police said.

He was taken in a critical condition to St Vincent’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

NSW Police spoke to a number of people at the beach about the incident.

Other incidents included a man knocked unconscious in an assault, though police did not highlight this as a major incident.

Waverley Council has been contacted for comment.
