Passenger charged over alleged violent reaction to being woken on Melbourne flight

A German man flying from Singapore to Melbourne has faced court over an allegedly violent reaction to being woken by cabin crew onboard the flight on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old man allegedly woke and “then pushed a female cabin crew member in the chest,” Australian Federal Police (AFP) said.
He was arrested by AFP officers at Melbourne Airport when the flight landed on Wednesday morning.

He had been on his way to New Zealand, only stopping in Melbourne to transit, but is now facing court in Australia, along with a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail if found guilty.
AFP Detective Acting Inspector Emily Nicholson said violent conduct on flights will not be tolerated.
“Cabin crew members on flights are simply trying to go about their work day, and they don’t need, and don’t deserve, to be subjected to violence, as has been alleged in this incident,” she said.
“The AFP has a presence at nine airports across the country, and we will continue to support airline staff and passengers by responding to incidents such as this, and by putting alleged offenders before the courts.”
