Residents in a leafy suburb of Sydney’s upper north shore were thrown into panic as heavily armed specialist police stormed a street on Tuesday morning.

Pictures taken by locals and displayed on social media showed a riot squad armoured vehicle rolling into Mosman soon after 7am and a turret popping open to expose a police officer with a machine gun.

Known as one of Australia’s most affluent areas, Prince Albert St in Mosman which is a direct route to Sydney’s famous Taronga Park Zoo, was in lockdown for several hours after a dramatic raid on a property near the Buena Vista Hotel.

Residents told the Mosman Collective the tactical operations officers with high powered rifles entered a home, located close to ‘The Buena’, and removed a man “very quickly”.

“When the Riot Squad van turned up we were very alarmed, and police had a loud hailer they were using to warn the man they were coming for him.”

NSW Police released a short statement with details of the raid saying: “A police operation is currently underway at Prince Albert Street, Mosman.

“An 18-year-old and another man, age unknown, were spoken to by police.

“No arrests have been made but inquiries are ongoing.

“There is no threat to the community and no further details are available at this time.

“Members of the public are urged to avoid the area.”
