Queensland woman dies after being hit by police car in Cairns North, investigation underway
‘No police officer shows up to work expecting to be involved in a situation like this.’
A woman has died after being hit by a police vehicle in Far North Queensland.
Police said the “serious traffic crash” happened about 6.55am on Thursday in Cairns North at the intersection of Sheridan and Lily streets.
Officers provided immediate medical assistance to the 71-year-old pedestrian before she was transported to Cairns Hospital with “life-endangering injuries”.

Regional Operations Deputy Commissioner John Tims said it was a “really sad, sad case”.
“This is an incredible, sad loss and has changed the life of a family forever,” he said.
“This is also being felt by the officers involved and the QPS as a whole.
“My sympathies go out to the family and friends of the 71-year-old woman.”
He said the police were offering the family “any support that they need”.
“A tragedy like this is not something we ever want to see happen,” he said.
Later adding, “No police officer shows up to work expecting to be involved in a situation like this”.
At the time, three officers were in the police vehicle, a sergeant and two constables.
No charges have been laid.
Deputy Commissioner Tims said the officers involved, first responders, and “the wider QPS family” are being provided with support.
An investigation conducted by the Forensic Crash Unit and Ethical Standard Command is now underway.
Deputy Commissioner Tims assured the public it would be a “full, thorough” investigation, which will include drug and alcohol testing of the officers involved.
He was unable to provide further information to reporters while the investigation, which will have oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission and Coroner, is ongoing.
It is not yet clear if they will remain on active duties during the investigation.
