One of the vehicles travelling southbound, a white Isuzu truck, then collided with a white Honda Accord travelling northbound before it burst into flames.

The 26-year-old driver of the Honda from Redcliffe, who appears to have been innocently driving in the right direction, sustained critical injuries and was later declared dead at the scene.

The 46-year-old driver of the truck, received head, neck, and pelvic injuries and was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police were forced to shut down the northbound lanes of the Bruce Highway, which was declared a crime scene, as they attempted to locate two other vehicles involved in the pursuit.

“They were going southbound in the northbound lane,’’ a police spokesman told the Courier Mail.

One witness on social media described the scene as “tormenting” to watch and said: “I feel so much empathy for all the victims and every witness and first responders there. They couldn’t have possibly been paid high enough tonight!”

“Came through this. Nearly had a head on with the truck driving the wrong way on the highway being chased by two white 4wds that had worksite strobes on the top of the 4wds,” another witness added.

Northbound lanes of the Bruce Highway in Burpengary were closed between Boundary Rd and Deception Bay Rd with the highway reopened at about 5.40am on Wednesday.

A crime scene has been declared and police are encouraging anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
