More than 20 police cars and a helicopter were required to chase the truck as it drove down the highway.

The vehicle wove through cars on the highway with the truck’s back doors open, sending food and debris across the road behind.

Witnesses told 9News they saw “potatoes” and a “couple of legs of ham” fly onto the highway, causing several commuters to stop in their tracks.

Footage released by Queensland Police shows the rims of the truck’s wheels sending sparks onto the road as the 230km chase continued.

The sparks spread to the dry grass on the side of the highway, igniting spot fires in the process.

The dramatic chase finally came to an end about 1.50pm on Canterwood Rd at Owanyilla after police deployed a tyre deflation device.

As he was pulled out of the truck and arrested, Mr Fitzgerald was asked by an officer if he knew how far he’d travelled with police in tow.

“Do you know where you are? You’re halfway to Maryborough,” the officer said.

Mr Fitzgerald was arrested and charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of dangerous driving, drive under the influence of liquor or a drug, evade and driving while suspended.
