Man spends 36 hours in drain trying to retrieve phone

A man has survived 36 hours in an underground drain system after initially trying to retrieve his phone before becoming trapped.

A man has been rescued after spending 36 hours in Brisbane’s drain system trying to retrieve his phone.

A rescue operation with paramedics and two Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews was launched in Kangaroo Point, in Brisbane’s inner city, on Monday morning after a resident spotted the man inside a drain.

Firefighters lifted the lid on the drain so the man could climb out with rescue efforts taking all of five minutes.

The man, aged in his 30s, told emergency services he had been stuck for about 36 hours after entering a drain to retrieve his phone.

He was taken to the Mater Hospital in a stable condition and treated for abrasions and exposure to the cold.
