The incident occurred in the Whitsunday region.

A young woman is dead and a man is fighting for life after he drove into her path on a highway in Queensland’s north.

The man in his 60s was driving his silver Rodeo ute along the Bruce Hwy at Myrtlevale, north of Proserpine, when he crashed into the 22-year-old woman’s oncoming black BMW about 5pm on Sunday.

“A silver Rodeo was travelling northbound on the Bruce Hwy and it appears, from initial investigations, that it has veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a black BMW being driving by a 22-year-old female,” Inspector Glenn Cameron said on Monday.

“Tragically, (she) has lost her life.”

She had been driving home to Mackay from Townsville when she was killed, Cameron said.

Police said her car was “fully engulfed” in flames by the time emergency services arrived.

She was declared dead at the scene.

The ute driver was treated by paramedics at the scene before he was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition.

Investigations are ongoing.
