On Saturday, Chip ‘n’ Mix opened its doors on Hastings S, and hundreds were waiting for a taste.
It is a simple and clever concept. Customers choose their hot chips and toppings. The price is based on weight, which is $8 for 150g.
There are 40 different toppings and sauces, including baked beans, spinach, avocado and cheese.
Founder Rhi Pearce calls the self-serve fry bar a “world first”.
“The idea came about because it’s something I wanted,” Pearce said.
“It’s definitely our goal for everyone to experience Chip ‘n’ Mix.”

The brand new business was so popular over the weekend it sold out of spuds, and closed on Monday, as the owners raced to restock.
Pearce said social media is behind the store’s success, with videos on Instagram and TikTok accumulating millions of views.
“We prepped for big numbers. It’s been overwhelmingly amazing,” Pearce said.
“But because of that we wanted to reset, refresh, make sure that anyone that did come was getting the level of experience we want to provide. And also, we needed a good nap.”
Just 200m down Hastings St is Yo-Chi, another self-serve business that proved the “weigh and pay” business model works.
Pearce and the Chip ‘n’ Mix team want to open two more stores within the next 12 months, and not just in Queensland.
They have also received multiple offers to franchise but are committed to running the business themselves.
“All we can do is keep building,” Pearce said.
