A young has died in a quad bike rollover on a Queensland beach.

The 23-year-old man was a passenger in the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) when it crashed on the beach at Toolakea in Townsville about 2.16am on Friday, killing him instantly.

There were “multiple” people on the beach when paramedics arrived, Queensland Ambulance Service’s Melanie Tecarr said.

She said “we were unable to save” the man, who has been identified as a resident of Malanda in the Tablelands region.

The 25-year-old man driving the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

The man, from Hermit Park in Townsville, was taken to Townsville University Hospital.

A forensic investigation into the crash is underway.

Beachside resident Breanna Wyburg said she was woken up about 2.30am by sirens and “flashing lights”.

“We didn’t know what was going on,” she told 7NEWS.

She said it was common for ATVs to travel on the beach, but not at night when it’s “pitch black”.

“(It’s) a shock to Toolakea, especially if someone’s died,” she said.

Tyre marks were seen on the beach on Friday.
