Brisbane Water Police rushed to the scene and found the puppy in the water between the boat and the pontoon about 10.30pm on Saturday.

Officers rescued the puppy, which had been using a partially submerged tyre to stay afloat.

The puppy was taken to an emergency vet in Stafford as a precaution after being in the water for an unknown amount of time, according to police.

“Officers also located a second dog and a cat on board, in what appeared to be of good health, and left behind food and water for the animals,” they said.

“No persons were aboard the vessel at the time to aid the dog in distress or assist police with their inquiries.”

Police said they have referred the matter to the RSPCA for further investigations.
