A teenager has died after falling down the embankment of a Queensland river.

Manaia Tither-Asiata, 18, was using a rope swing off a steep rock wall when he fell about 15m into the Coomera River at Maudsland — on the Gold Coast — about 6.40pm on Sunday.

Emergency services gave medical assistance, but he died at the scene.

“It’s very sad especially if this has occurred in front of family and friends. It would be a tragic event to witness and no one would want to see such a thing,” Gold Coast Acting Superintendent Jason Tuffley said.

Queensland Police will now prepare a report for the coroner about the non-suspicious death.

7NEWS understands the rope swings were not approved by the council and will be removed.
