Police officers made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act shortly afterwards.

The gunman was believed to be inside a home on the same street, with specialist police called to negotiate with the man, according to reports by The Courier Mail. However, the man then left the property and was later arrested about 7.45pm after his vehicle was found near a fast food restaurant along the Bruce Highway, near Hinton Street in Mackay.

Police say the man is not physically injured and he is currently assisting police with investigations.

An emergency situation was declared at approximately 5.20pm, with boundaries encompassing Robb Place, Paradise Street, Archibald Street, Kindermar Street and Denton Street.
