A toddler has died after being hit by a car outside a school in Brisbane in front of his horrified mother and siblings.

The two-year-old boy was run down in the car park of Durack State School, south of Brisbane, just before 4pm on Thursday.

“Police are at the scene of a single vehicle traffic crash at a school in Durack where a two-year-old boy has been struck and killed by a vehicle,” Queensland Police said on Thursday.

The school’s principal was among those who tried to revive the boy before emergency services arrived as other families gathered to collect their own kids or attend the school’s end of year awards night.

“Unfortunately, despite best efforts, the boy has died at the scene,” police said.

The grieving family is well-known in Brisbane’s Somali community.

Queensland African Communities Council President Beny Bol said “nothing will make sense to them, and it will be so forever”.

”It’s the worst thing you would ever think of to happen to you - as a mother, a father, a family,” he told 7NEWS.

“We need to be together. We need to put ourselves in the same situation. And whatever we can do, any little support.”

One parent told 7NEWS: “I can’t imagine what the parents are going through right now, it’s really sad.”

Another said: “There was a lot of fear seeing all that and then saying we couldn’t get in there. You’re worried about the kids.”

Others raised their concerns about the lack of fencing in the area, saying “it’s an accident waiting to happen”.

A vehicle has been seized and the female driver questioned, however, no charges have been laid.

Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said the investigation will be “extremely thorough”.

Counsellors have been brought in to support those who witnessed the tragedy and anyone in the school community who has been affected by it.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
