The event is actually known as a gustnado or waterspout and was seen forming along the river near Kangaroo Point about 4pm on Friday.

Multiple severe thunderstorms were forecast for parts of southeast Queensland, including Brisbane and Sunshine Coast, with experts calling one storm “very dangerous”.

Senior meteorologist Shane Kennedy said that Brisbane was “fairly lucky” on Thursday and missed the worst of the severe weather, but said the city “may not be quite as lucky during the Friday”.

Reports of hail hitting parts of Brisbane CBD and inner city suburbs coincided with the waterspout forming.

“All of these severe thunderstorms could bring large hail, so 2cm or more, damaging wind gusts, which are 90k/hr or more, and heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding,” Kennedy said.

Giant hail, which BOM categorises as 5cm or more, has also been recorded in Boonah.
