A man has been charged after police allegedly discovered homemade pipe bombs inside a vehicle during a traffic stop in NSW.

Around 12.30pm on Monday, officers from Murrumbidgee Police District pulled over a car travelling west on Sturt Highway near Hay in the Riverina region for a random breath test.

For safety, the Sturt Highway was closed in both directions, and an exclusion zone was established.

“The Rescue Bomb Disposal Unit were called to the scene and confirmed the devices were explosives before they were dismantled.” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Two men, aged 33 and 30, were arrested and taken to Hay Police Station.

The 33-year-old was charged with two counts of possessing an explosive in a public place, two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, and custody of a knife in a public place.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Griffith Local Court on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old man was released without charge as investigations continue.
